Looking to pick up new sneakers for my Blur. Looking for something on the fatter side that still rolls fast and hooks up well on rocks & roots. Been running Nevegals since I got the bike, but they're not considered "fast rolling" by most measures :)

Some considered:
-Panaracer Fire XC Pro: used to run these all the time, but they're 2" wide
-Schwalbe Hans Dampf or Nobby Nic: pricey, questionable longevity (and therefore value)?
-Conti Trail King: Pat's said avoid Conti's?
-Maxxis Minion or Ardent: don't know much about Maxxis
-Panaracer Rampage: hard to find the 26" version of this but it exists

others, or thoughts on those?

thanks

First off let me say I am a tire whore. I've been looking for that magic combo of- Light(ish), fast(ish), Grippy and Long lasting- so far I have yet to find it! Most of the tires your looking at I've had within the past 2 years so here's my brief reviews:

1.) Nevegals- Super grippy ( especially the stickee versions), but heavy and slow. Sidewalls are ok, but not great
2.) Conti Trail Kings- Awesome grip, fast rolling ( for a burly tire) and very high volume. I had a set for about 6 months and the rear tire sidewall blew out. The front tire looked almost new. (If it weren't for the sidewall blowing out I would def. have gotten another pair- really great all around tire...)
3.) Maxxis Ardents- I just got the Exo sidewall version of this and so far so good. Cornering grip is good, they roll really well, just waiting to see how the sidewalls hold up
4.) Schwalbe Nobby Nicks- I got a set of these on my 29er- fast rolling, awesome cornering traction and pretty light for a "trail" tire. Sidewalls are pretty good so far, fingers crossed.
5.) Hans Damf- I friend of mine has these and they are BURLY. Huge volume and huge knobs. So far he likes them, but is planning on swapping them to something a little faster and lighter....

The weird thing is I never used to have a problem with sidewalls, but the past 3 years I blow the sidewalls MUCH earlier than the tread wearing out. I blame it on all the rocks in Sutton!

Schwalbe racing ralphs with snakeskin sidewalls. Great traction, fast rolling and good protection with the snakeskin. This is the perfect tire for this time of year. The bad is they are expensive and wear out a little faster than some other tires. If you want performance, you gotta pay the price. Nobby Nics get a nod for the same reasons but are slower rolling and overkill in summer conditions. They are a better early spring/late fall tire IMO.

I ran a Rubber Queen/Trail King 2.4 Ust tire upfront on my Blur Classic for two years and loved it. Ate up the Worcester rocks and roots. Inspires a lot of confidence on the downhills. Had sidewall issues with UST Vertical Pro, but never with the Trail King.

Using 2.4 on front and 2.2 rear on my HD140 with no issues. BikeBling has kevlar version with Black Chili Compound for $40.00. This is the version you would probably want.

I'm going to try the Maxxis Ardent, on sale for $40:

Q: Def. going w/2.4" in front, but for rear would you recommend the 2.4 or 2.25?

2.25 IMO. 2.4 is better up front but not needed in the rear.

I would go 2.2 as well. The Ardents have lasted really well for me, and I have been pretty happy with their roll-ability and how well the hook up....

Also if they are a BIG 2.4 you could even run into problems with them fitting into your frame. I ran some Nevegal 2.35's on my Ibis and they would rub the frame when pushed hard into a corner.....

I have some low mileage velociraptors that I always rode faster than you with...

I can say the nevegals are great cornering and braking

What tires are you running? " Round black ones"

quote from Kenny Roberts, one of the best motorcycle road racers ever, as said to a reporter.
